Turning on auto numbering

How do I turn on auto numbering for a column? I have followed the instructions in the help section however the cells in the column where I have turned on auto-numbering seem to be frozen and

there are no auto numbers in them.  The instructions seem simple enough but aren's working for me.  Is there something I'm missing?
