Custom Message (html) in Automated Workflow

I setup a number of workflows a couple months ago to kick of at the beginning of each month.  I've got html within the custom message that worked great for the first couple months.  When the notifications were kicked out yesterday, they all show the html tags within the email.  Did something happen recently which no longer allows html within the workflow's custom message?

Smartsheet support unfortunately responded with "It may be possible that we supported this in the past, but it isn’t expected, supported behavior. HTML markup in custom messages isn’t officially supported but I've let our Product team know about your interest in this feature."
