I believe the new "Record a Date" Workflow feature will meet this need in certain cases. Still wishing, though, for a way to detect the row number I'm on, and be able to operate on that with formulas.

Yes, you're correct that some workflows won't need my workaround anymore, but for example, the Record a date feature only records the date and not the time (if you don't look at the cell history), and if you want to store/lock something time or something other than dates it's still needed.

Regarding the detection of the row numbers.

Can you describe how you'd want to use it?

I've long wished I could automate "legal numbering" in certain sheets. Example:

1. xx

1.1 xx

1.2 xx

2. xx

2.1 xx

In this illustration, if I dragged 1.2 to just under 2. it would then be numbered 2.1 and its successor would become 2.2.
