Is there a way to use Document Generator in Work Apps

I started implementing Work Apps for our manufacturing company. As our smartsheet use has grown I don't want to give read access to all our "database" sheets. Work Apps seem to be the right solution for that. We utilize the document generator but are not able to use that in workapps? Is there a reason some features do not carry over to work apps?
