Do links/formulas update in the background without opening the sheet?

Ive built a project management system in SCC and have setup everyone to work from reports. If all goes well no one would ever go into a sheet.

If no one goes into the sheets ever, would the formulas and cell links and conditional formatting, etc update still? or do these require someone to enter a sheet (not a report) and let things update for a min, then save?

@Andrée Starå thanks for response. does that mean formulas, inbound links, etc do not update without opening sheets?

or is this solution you posted just for recording a date? I dont need to record a date, i just want to make sure our formulas, cross sheet formulas, cell links, etc all get updated accordingly without opening a sheet.
