User Group use case?

I understand setting up and using User Groups makes it easier for sharing... but are you not able to "@" a group in conversations? Ive tried it in a few cases and nothing comes up.
Considering the amount of manual work to setup and maintain groups, i feel it is severly limited use case if only for sharing, no?
