Can you not do conditional formatting on a report that has a calendar?

I have a report that I made from pulling multiple sheets and certain columns, that I use as a calendar with the calendar view. I would like to color code the tasks on the calendar by project status, I saw that this is possible using conditional formatting or by clicking on the item in the Calendar view and changing the color. I have not been able to use any of those methods and was wondering if anyone had insight as to why. The conditional reporting button in my taskbar for this report does not appear, and when I click on the item in the calendar, it lets me change the content in the item but not the color.
