default order of cards in card view

I have a very basic question about card view. What is the DEFAULT order of cards in this view? I've built a basic grid plus Gantt with dependencies, and when I open card view, the cards are not in the order in which line items appear on the grid, they're not in start- or end-date order, and they are not alphabetical. Can't see the logic. All advice greatly appreciated!
