Request to Update: Is there a way to make some fields required
I have a form where the user is presented a form with some of the fields from the table. Once the approval routing is complete, the user is prompted to fill the remaining fields. Is there a way to make some of these fields mandatory? Currently, all of the asterisks go away.

Hi,
Unfortunately, it's not possible at the moment, but it's an excellent idea!
Please submit an Enhancement Request when you have a moment.
As a workaround, you could have automation workflows that would send update requests if any "required" fields aren't filled in.
Would that work?
I hope that helps!
Have a fantastic day!

Dear @Andrée Starå,
What trigger is to be used in order to check whether the mandatory fields haven't been populated?
BR, Dmitry

You would need to add a condition for each field that is mandatory.
Trigger for when rows are added
Condition
Or
Condition
Make sense?
I hope that helps!
Be safe and have a fantastic week!

I need to check on the 'Changed row' trigger whether the field "Field_A" has been populated with some data (not blank). If it is blank a new Update Request is to be sent, and will be repeated until the request receiver enters something.
The problem is that I have to choose what has been updated. But if user (receiver) submits Update Request with nothing changed, my trigger would not started

You would have to have a recurring workflow trigge that checks if the field is empty for that to work.
Would that work?

@Andrée Starå, Recurring means no than once a day, which is too long. Hourly could be a solution but checking every 10 mins would be better. Any suggestions here?
Is it possible to initiate the Update Request via API (w/o SDK)?

I think it's possible to trigger it through the API and maybe even the 3rd party service, Zapier.
Is Zapier an option?

A little bewildered about this lack of solution. I'm a fan of Smartsheet, but there are some missing components that are hard to fathom how a reputable solution like Smartsheet missed out on them. One is not having numeric-only fields. Another is to offer this fantastic update request form option and not include features to require certain fields. There are TONS of online form solutions out there, some built by developers that barely know what they're doing. And ALL of them include required field functionality. I get that this is slightly different in the fact that an Update Request is used when a row of data already exists. At the end of the day, it's still a webform. Sending a subsequent update request is a fairly poor work around. Sure, let's bombard people's inboxes when the solution should be built-in in the first place. We already sent them one Update Request and unfortunately, Update Requests in Smartsheet also don't include a field description in which you could provide them better instructions immediately above or below the field in question (sure you could include in the body of the email, but separating the information has a higher probability of error than putting it next to the data). Smartsheet has many bells and whistles, but there are some very key fundamentals you've missed.

I have a nice Smartsheet / Zapier work around. If anyone wants to know how it works let me know. It is a little complicated to explain but it is tested. haugemarc@gmail.com

Here is a workaround using Zapier. It is a bit clunky but it can work very well.
-
Here is an updated workaround that does not need zapier and is cleaner to implement. Zapier would be needed for file attachments

Thanks for the workaround Marc; however, it appears that this would only be applicable for 2 update requests right? My specific use case requires there to be x number of update requests... Wish Smartsheets had a more scalable solution - seems like this functionality should be built out already
