Automation action - Add comment

Add new action "Add comment". This action can be used in automation workflows to add comments. It should be triggered on specific row in the sheet and in the comment it will be possible to use the references to specific column names {{Column-name}}.

Super handy will be, if you can also generate references like @{{Sales-person}} and so on.

This feature would be really useful in sheets with multiple workflows that act upon a row. If each workflow was able to use an "Add comment" action, it could essentially create a log of workflow actions that triggered on each row. Depending on the process, this could make tracking complicated setups/trigger much easier for the end user.

I would love to have a field called 'Status Update' and every time someone enters and update it logs it as a comment. This way we can view historical status updates in the comments.

Our organization uses the comments section of each row to share updates. It would be excellent if we could add workflow automation to automatically add a comment in certain scenarios, such as when another value changes.

Currently, Smartsheet automation allows actions such as sending alerts, updating cell values, moving rows, and requesting approvals. However, there is no option to automatically add a comment to a row or cell when certain conditions are met.

Use Case:

When a status changes to “Needs Review,” automatically add a comment like “Please review this row for accuracy.”
When a due date is missed, insert a comment indicating the delay reason or next steps.

Benefits:

Improves collaboration by providing context directly in the sheet without manual intervention.
Reduces repetitive tasks for project managers and teams.
Keeps communication centralized within Smartsheet instead of relying on external notifications.

Suggested Implementation:

Add “Add Comment” as an action in the Automation Rules panel.
Allow dynamic text in comments using column values (e.g., “Task [Task Name] requires attention.”).

This would be very useful if it considered parent/child rows. Having users update progress via a Report rather than a Sheet is safer. They often add a comment to a task (child) row as they mark it complete. When I'm looking at the overall project health, I'm looking at parent rows — and don't see the dozen comments on the child rows. It would be HUGELY efficient if the comment on the child row could be automated to copy itself to its parent row — thus the parent row would collect the comments so that I could see all of them together.
