merge data into cells like excel does in a user friendly way

Since merging in a database doesn't really work (the whole structure being defined by rows) I was thinking about mechanics of how I could still see a merged cell. It seems to me that Smartsheet could define a column type that supports showing merged cells on reports/dashboards by having a linked column that auto-assigns a unique identifier to each row, but that assigns the same value to each row when cells are toggled to merged. When generating the report, Smartsheet would know that any cells having the same identifier would then display as merged. This would only work for merging across rows, not across columns, but it would make my day.

The ability to take multiple cells, horizontally or vertically, that contain the same value, and merge them together so it becomes one big cell across multiple rows or columns.

If merging cells in Smartsheet is not a viable/feasible option due to its nature of being a "database", can we at least have text that is viewable in one row when it's not word wrapped vs. cutting off longer cell text?
I love Smartsheet but the lack of cell merging has forced me back to Excel. I hope you are able to incorporate that soon.
Would love the ability to Merge cells. I often create a sheet that requires several columns to organize data but like to have a general notes section at the bottom that are too large to fit in the columns I have set up.
