How do I create templates for common workflows that trigger alerts when predecessor tasks are completed?

Did you check the Template Gallery? There are many workflow templates out there. One of them should at least get you started. You will find them from your HOME tab, get new, and templates should be there. It defaults to the Featured templates so you should hit the down arrow next to Featured Templates to select a catagory to see it's templates. Have fun hunting. There are some really cool ones out there.
