Create additional dependency column to facilitate auto roll-up to parent

I created a new column "Effort". I want the "Effort" rolled up to the parent. That is not happening.

 

One of the FAQ states that column must be a dependency column. However, I can only see "Predecessors" and "Duration", when I go to <Project Settings/Dependencies Settings>

 

One way is to add a formula in the parent cell is, to sum-up everything under it. I hate to go this route as it is very manual, and I might end up messing it if I insert new rows. 

 

Any ideas??

Try using the CHILDREN() option of =SUM so that the formula will not need to change as you add rows.

 

On the parent row, use the formula =SUM(CHILDREN()).

Hi All—there isn't programmed functionality in Smartsheet for Effort but I've got your vote down for this feature on our enhancement request list for further consideration. At this time, the only way to calculate this would be through custom formulas that you place in the sheet.

Thanks Lee and Shaine. This will suffice for now.

 

However, it only works for pure numbers. I have the values as 2d, 10d , 16d to denote they are days and it won't work. Though the same behavior worked just fine with "Duration". Unless there is another trick I can use .
