Filtering Alerts for Status

I have standard project action logs set up with alerts sent to task owners two days prior to a specified due date (date type column).

 

There is also a status column indicating if the action is OPEN or CLOSED (dropdown type column).

 

It would be very useful if the alerts allowed a filter to be applied so that, in this case, only alters are sent for OPEN items or is there another way to do this?
