Comment Automations
Greetings, Smartsheet Jedis!
Is there a way of setting up an automation that alerts "specific people" as well as a "contact in a cell" whenever a comment is made on a sheet WITHOUT sending an alert to the person that submitted the comment?
We currently have an automation in play that pings everyone whenever a comment is made, regardless of who makes the comment. That being said, our Project Managers ("contacts in a cell") do not appreciate being emailed whenever they add a comment to their own projects. However, they do appreciate being emailed when someone else adds a comment to their projects 😉
I feel like I am missing something very basic and am about to begin a one man journey down "the Rabbit-Hole of Overthinking".
"Help me, Obi-wan Kenobi...You're my only hope"
Thanks!
Kyle

Hello Princess Leia @Kyle Morgan
Thank you for posting! Upon further review and testing on this topic, what you are trying to accomplish with regards to the recipient to only get notified from replies, changes & added comments by other users & not when they recipient is also adding their own comment are currently not supported so the Empire may have won this one, but the Rebels are not backing down!
Please submit an Enhancement Request to have this be considered for future development in Smartsheet.
In the meantime, the workflow below after testing will only notify changes & replies made to comments that were added.
Additionally, I recommend checking out the following links below for resources on this topic and what Smartsheet currently supports.
- Configure How You Receive Notifications from Smartsheet
- Have Conversations in the Context of Your Work
- Switch Between Row-level and Sheet-level Conversations
- Tag Someone With the @ Sign
- Have Targeted Conversations With Comments

Thank you for your reply, Krissia! (and even more "Thanks" for your sense of humor 👍️)
This was exactly as I had feared.

This is exactly the issue I'm coming across as well - and I hope there is a solution in the future for this. Going to submit an enhancement request for this now!

Any update on this topic. Running into this issue and looking for a solution other than the @Chewbacca
Also, if we have members in dynamic view and want to add/respond to comments for them to see or use the @Chewbacca, can we do that in the underlying sheet without giving them access? Or do we need to add/respond to comments in the Dynamic view sheet?
