I hope you're well and safe!
Unfortunately, as far as I know, it's not possible now, but it's an excellent idea!

You're more than welcome!
The best way I've found to make it less visible is to color the background in the same color.
Would that help?

Hello. Somehow, however I don't know what I did, I was able to remove the gray background on my dropdown items in one of my Smartsheets, so there has to be a way.
As you can see, my dropdown included In Office, Work from Home, Travel, and PTO all having a different color. However, the gray background does NOT show up.
A question I have and hopefully one of you can answer regarding dropdown menus is...in the dropdown column I have chosen the option of multiple names, but as you have stated that we cannot remove the gray background. I am wanting to put a conditional format together that when one or more names are chosen under the column I want only that cell to change color to gray. When there is nothing in the cell, I want the cell color to stay soft yellow. Everything I have tried in the conditional formatting is NOT working...HELP?!?

The grey background behind text appears if you are using a multi-select dropdown list, as it shows the separation between dropdown options. However if you change the column type to be single-select, then the cell text and background colour will be the default colour.
Can you post a screen capture of how you have the conditional formatting rule set up? It sounds like there may be a conflicting rule or a criteria we're missing to get the background colour how you'd like.
