Why is copying a column such a sophisticated idea for SS to get? There are numerous requests, well over 1.5 years in age..

  • Looking at all the comments that go back 2 years this does not seem like a high priority for Smartsheet. This feature should have already been included and is needed to help users management large EXISTING sheets. Using the Row function will not work, NEED THE ABILITY TO COPY A COLUMN FROM ONE SHEET TO ANOTHER.

Duplicate & Copy Columns would make template building and scalability a lot better! Glad to hear duplication is on the roadmap and Copy is being considered.

Would like to upvote this but don't see how. It is not uncommon for a sheet to have the same contact list for different purposes and retyping this in or being unable to export and import, is unfortunate.

This seems like an extremely straightforward and simple feature that should already be integrated. I second you. Individually making 10+ identical columns is a time waster.

Ditto, this would be such a valuable feature to copy and paste /duplicate a column !

Gets my vote - 1st working day of the new year - this feature would have saved me wasting a lot of time!

  • I agree with the overwhelming responses here that we NEED THE ABILITY TO COPY A COLUMN FROM ONE SHEET TO ANOTHER!

In many scenarios, we are using columns with same description and data type. The only modification would be column name. Currently, you have to create the column from scratch. It would be helpful to be able to copy existing column.

Need ability to copy columns in sheet. When creating forms or surveys that have duplicative type questions with the same properties, it would be great to be able to copy the initial columns created to cut down on time in creating the data sheet.

  • I would like to request a feature enhancement that would allow users to copy and paste header columns within Smartsheet. This functionality would significantly improve workflow efficiency, especially when managing multiple sheets with similar structures. Currently, users must manually recreate column headers, which can be time-consuming and prone to inconsistencies. The ability to copy and paste headers would streamline data organization and enhance usability.

Thank you for considering this request. I appreciate your time and look forward to any updates on this potential feature.

I too agree with this request..

Templates dont apply here as we are only wanting the ability to copy the Columns "Name", "Type", "Formats", and/or "Formulas".

Here is a good example of why this basic need is necessary:

Lets say you want to create a report from 3+ sheets that share several of the same columns to merge into 1 view, BUT in one of those sheets, there is 1 or more column names that has an extra space (same name "Status Progress" vs "Status Progress") but to the naked eye and how Smartsheets displays it live, you wouldnt see it that extra space. So now, in that merged report, 2 of the 3 sheet's columns are merged as 1 (including their type - text/date/dropdwn etc.), but that other sheet's column that has that extra space or spelled slightly wrong in the title, is showing as another column under the filter choices.

Now that user has to go to that base sheet and redo its label(s), making sure its "IDENTICAL" to the others and go back the report and refresh multiple times to force the servers to talk/update. The same issue applies to the same name columns from multiple sheets but rather them being all Text Type Columns, 2 are dropdowns and 1 is a text, which again separates their columns in the report views, not to mention also messes up the filter options as they have different criterias to pull in data.

I have had to fix dozens upon dozens of columns due to those 2 examples above that could have all been eliminated if we had the ability to just copy multiple columns (CTRL + Mouse Click or SHIFT + Mouse Click).

😠 This ability is already a standard in your competitions software, so please listen to our requests when we are constantly reminding Smartsheets Teams that there is an issue and your services are easily replaceable. We have better things to do than to come here and constantly complain about standards/issues that should have already been addressed years ago when originally brought up. Please focus on fixing / updating your basic standard UI's and worry about AI crap later, as most of us just want the basics/standards that all your competition currently offers, not some new costly App or AI feature (that has its own rediculous list of use and security issues on its own).
