One deficiency Smartsheet has that could be solved is that out of the box application user experience. I think one way this could be solved is to have buttons that could be added to the sheet similar to excel macro buttons. Instead of a macro the button would fire an automation. I think perhaps a commands window could be added that would have a customizable menu where buttons could be added and organized that trigger automation
I agree. The workaround I use now is to put a checkbox on the sheet summary, and in a 'Trigger column' with the column formula: =#Checkbox
. Then, I add an automation that triggers when the column formula changes. Every time I press the checkbox (and save the sheet), the automation triggers. While this method works, having a button would indeed simplify the process and make it more intuitive.
I agree and need this too. I now have different forms with a dropdown, depending on which selection in the dropdown is submitted, my automation starts. That's how I get my end-user to trigger automation from a dashboard. But it's visually not appealling to the eye and it's such a complex work-around.
It could be so much easier to just create a button and link the automation.
