Resource Management - Connect to existing project option missing

edited 08/07/24 in Resource Management

I imported 20 projects into Resource Management via csv file and would like to tie them to smartsheet project plans. Usually there is a radio button option that allows you to connect to an existing project, but I don't see that anymore. Anyone else notice that option is missing? Importing the projects and connecting is significantly faster for me than creating a new one on each project plan.

  • Hi @Kayte Grigsby

Is there any chance that the projects were uploaded into a Resource Management account that has a different email from your Smartsheet account? Here's an article that may help: Site faviconTroubleshoot Resource Management panel connection | Smartsheet Learning Center

If this hasn't helped, you could open up a ticket with Smartsheet Support in the Support Portal with a screen recording showing your two different set-ups.

    Cheers,

  • Thank you for your reply @Genevieve P.! Yes, I am using the same account.

I heard back from my Account Executive, and she said the product team suggests I change my process, because they think it's dangerous to connect to an existing project, which will delete the assignments in the existing RM project. However, at the time I am connecting it, there are no assignments in the RM project, it's just a much faster process than creating the project via Smartsheet, exporting the project list, editing the additional fields I want in RM, and then importing the list back in. I wish the option to connect was still available to those who understand what could go wrong, however, I can do it the slower way for now.

  • This is a major issue for us. I don't understand how the product team thinks they are being helpful by removing this option.

  • This was a major issues for me too and I opened a ticket w/ Smartsheet support earlier this month (Jan'25) to get an explanation. This was their response. Hopefully they'll get this resolved.

    Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to the Smartsheet Support team regarding an issue you are experiencing with not being able to connect a project plan to an existing Resource Management project in Smartsheet. I’d be happy to assist you.

We want to inform you that, due to recent updates related to the phase integration, users will no longer be able to connect to existing projects at this time. We're actively working on new functionality that will allow users to import data directly from the RM side, which should help resolve the issue in the near future. We understand that this situation may cause frustration, and we deeply appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to improve the system. In the meantime, please submit product feedback via this process. Rest assured that we are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as soon as we have more information to share.

This worked until very recently. They've made changes to the way the links work and this is now completely broken.

We need a solution because I have a longstanding project plan, with lots of automations and custom columns etc. I also have a longstanding project in Resource Management that the team have been tracking hours on. And now I have no way to link them.

Edit: Dear Smartsheet Team. I'm sorry to say but this is not acceptable. You've removed a major piece of functionality and you've not given us any tools to resolve this issue or the problems it causes. This will definitely be escalated to customer success.
