Hi all,

I'm trying to change the date formatting but I have no idea how to do so: trying to set date like

May 2016 or 01/05/16 or any other formt but only comes up as 05/01/2016.

Can you help me?

  • Hi there! Your date formatting is set through your personal settings (read more here: http://help.smartsheet.com/customer/portal/articles/796268-adjusting-personal-settings)

The part you'll be interested in reads:

    • Language (Country): Your Language (Country) setting also dictates your default date format (e.g., mm/dd/yy or dd/mm/yy) and default thousands separator (comma or decimal).

    Hello bosniafra,

As cdouglas mentioned, you can change the formatting to be organized as the country/region you are located in, but currently there isn't a way to have the date appear as May 2016. The dates are only able to appear in a numerical format such as 01/05/16. I'll be sure to add your vote of support to have other date format options within the sheet to our enhancement request list.

    Thank you both!

  • Adding my vote for this feature; need to be able to display dates with the day of the week, ex, "Wednesday, 12/2" or "Wednesday December 11, 2015".

  • I am adding my vote for this too. It would be nice to do this by cell if possible.

    Adding my vote - Need short version date DD/MM (31/12) and day / time d/mm h:mm AM/PM (31/12 09:00 AM)

Robin, Jeff, and Wayne - I have recorded your votes!

  • Travis - Any news on date formats?

To reduse the width of our reports we need shorter date fields DD/MM (31/12) and day / time d/mm h:mm AM/PM (31/12 09:00 AM)

    Regards Wayne

  • Hi Wayne-- I don't have an update on this functionality at this time, as far as I'm aware it's not on our short term roadmap. In the meantime, if you wanted, you could report on the "actual" date columns in your sheet and then use a formula to create a shorthand version of the date in another column, something like:

    =IF(LEN(DAY(Start29)) = 1, "0" + DAY(Start29), DAY(Start29)) + "-" + IF(LEN(MONTH(Start29)) = 1, "0" + MONTH(Start29), MONTH(Start29))

Then, you could have this as the column actually displayed in the report!

  • Hi Smartsheet,

We also have a problem with the current date format of smart sheet. We also need to show to client the activity within a day. So we need a fortmat of mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm in the start date and end date of the project management template. Also it would be better if we could zoom in to gantt chart view up to hour level. It is hassle for us project manager to use other project management tool just for this functions. Hope you could come up with the solution for this.

    Sincerely,

    Dennis Garcia

    Hi Dennis,

We currently don't have functionality for tracking time in date columns (such as start date and end date) or displaying the Gantt timeline in hours on the desktop browser application, but I've got your vote down for these on our enhancement request list for further consideration.

    We appreciate your input!

  • I also vote for the ability to chooce a shorter date format of "03/12" instead of "03/12/17" which takes up too much space in the table. Thanks!

  • Custom date formats, independent of country code, is very important to me, and apparently many of you as well.

My preferred style is YYYY-MM-DD which doesn't seem to be available in any country, let alone English countries. This format is useful for many reasons:

    • It's sortable
    • It's less prone to errors and misunderstanding
      • You know which numbers are the year
      • It's pretty obvious you wouldn't have the day come next so that's the month.
      • 2-digit years are so 1999... and for the next 14 years they can be confused with days in most cases
    • This is the Metric standard format

I hope this feature is added soon.

However, just like a "Successors" field for project data, this request has been sitting idle for a year and a half.

Hopefully some positive usability changes are coming soon.  I would like utility improvements first - the interface can be improved later.

Maybe, as with my suggestion for "Successors" in another thread, we can all create help tickets asking for this feature.  That should help drive development.

    Jim

  • I also vote for custom date formats, and use YYYY-MM-DD almost exclusively.

  • Just allow users to specify their date/time format. This is a crazy simple requirement.

Please include standard Microsoft-style format strings so we can show date AND time parts for a date/time typed-column.

    Thanks,

    Richard
