Triggering Notifications to "Assigned To"

I have added 4 individuals with their email addresses in the Resource Management section and I'm trying to figure out what triggers an email notification to go to the people put in the "Assigned To" whether in the Task List or Project.  

In the Task List, do I have to set up individual alerts for each task?  Is the same true in a Project?

I know Project you can set up workflows, but I'm not doing that right now.

Hi Sebastian,

The simplest method would be to use Automations, but you can also use individual reminders for each row and contact/contact column.
