Conditionally changing cells
Hi,
I'm looking to see if there is any formula(or anything else) I could use to change a cell to a specific pre-defined value, if a different cell is CHANGED TO a certain value.
I know that the changed to functionality is available through automation, however the action options in automation do not offer cell changing functionality.
If this is unclear please feel free to ask me to elaborate.
Cheers

Hi
At present there is no such option / workflow that would auto-change a cell's value, based on another one.
I hope this feature is added soon!

Hi @Scott Rae,
If you don't need to change the value in the cell, it will work with an IF function formula.
Would that work?
I hope that helps!
Have a fantastic weekend!

The problem with using an IF statement would be that I want the dependant cell to remain what it was set as even if the main cell then goes on to be changed.
From what I understand there is no rule within an IF statement for this
Thanks for your reply,

Scott

Happy to help!
The third-party service, Zapier, is an excellent option for this scenario. Is that an option for you?

This worked for me
=IF([Column Name]@row = "String Value", "String Value")

Please have a look at my post below, where I describe a method that might help with your use-case.
Let me know how it goes!

Dear @Andrée Starå
I'm working on an Action Item sheet which collects action items with action, owners, due dates, and status (New/Open, In Progress, Overdue, Completed, Unassigned).
I want this list to be supported by automated workflows, which notifies owners when items turn overdue based on the due date (due date + 1 day @ 06:00 triggers email). This is implemented and works.
Now I also want to change the status automatically BY the workflow (i.e. cell content set to Overdue). I don't want to program the sheet cells itself, but the workflow shall modify the content of the sheet (i.e. the status field). I don't want to program the cells because this is "user space" with manual entry/drop-down of the status. (And I don't want to duplicate status columns as computed columns, which then compute user input & dates to overall status.) The workflow itself shall act as a "governance user" to support the overall action item process (sending emails, updating fields, etc.). No programming stuff & hidden logic wanted in the sheet.
At the moment I don't see a lean way of implementing this with your workflows - whilst refraining from cell formulas. An awkward experiment could be to copy content (the string "Overdue") from other sheets into the action item sheet. I'm looking for a workflow capability to directly modify cell content in the sheet.
Dou you have an idea or future Smartsheet Workflow feature to accomplish this intent?
Shall I submit a product enhancement request?
with best regards,
Peter
