Importing MS Project into Smartsheets BAD problem

Hello, Amazing Community,

I am hoping someone can share with me some clarity on my current issue. I am trying to import an MS project file into smartsheet gant. The Problem is that though all the data transfers over fine, the dates and dependencies are completely off. There seems to be some type of disconnect that I can not seem to understand why. It should be a simple export and import process, but every time I import the MS project file, my dependencies are off and my dates are off by a lot. Also, my activities/tasks (which are in my primary column) are out of order in most cases. So weird. I have searched all over the internet for the same issue and many folks have the same issue while many others do not. Has any of you ever dealt with this issue before? Any results or feedback you can provide me I would truly appreciate it.

I get these MS project files from clients all the time and I dont want to have to manually fix them every time I want to import them to smartsheet :( Please help.

    Hi @Smartsheet Batmon ,

Within the Help Center Article about importing there is some information regarding MS Project where importing from mpp files may sometimes cause some row structure problems similar to the ones you report.

The available troubleshooting for these scenarios is to try and convert the files to .xml and re-attempt the import from the .xml file.

If this can't be of help to circumvent the reported behaviour, I would recommend opening a ticket with our Support team via this form or accessing the new Customer Support Portal.

    Cheers!

  • Thank you @Julio S.

I am so confused why smartsheet would have an option to import Mpp files knowing that it's not a smooth transfer and that it has these issues. This was a bad call on smart sheets for not thinking this one through. That's unfortunate. Now i have the option (the button is available to import), but whats the point because all my info gets messed up.

    Hi @Smartsheet Batmon,

I can agree on the fact that the current information regarding the compatibility of fields between MS Projects and Smartsheet is very limited and this can cause some frustration. If you wish to share your feedback about this functionality, you may do so by using the recent "Product Feedback" icon that has been recently added in the Home Screen of the app that will take you to this Form. This can be helpful to share your insights directly with our Product team so that your voice is heard.

    Cheers!

I'm a bigger supporter of SmartSheet and a transplant from MS Project after 17 years.

Import feature is causing a lot of issues. I have to upload a project from our business parter to SmartSheet to display project dashboard ince the partner does not use SS.

Rows are off and constrainst are out of alignment. I have 2800 lines and growing in MS Project, converted to .XML which only import core project fields (task name, duration, dependencies, start/end dates etc. ) Just found out the SF contraints are not properly calculated. Still working on what other problems with constraints.

Very frustrating and deterant from using SS vs MS Project.
