Locking Sort?

Hi Folks,

I have a project sheet shared amongst my team where various "editors" are constantly updating statuses, priorities, etc. I have a sort set to first show project status, then priority, but am finding that all of my "editors" can update the sort at any point. It's throwing all the data out of wack. Anything I can do as the "admin" to restrict the ability to sort without restricting the ability to edit data in the columns?

Have you tried to give them editing rights on a Report which calls all data from the Project sheet?

If they update the Report instead of the Sheet, then they wouldn't have sorting permissions, or if they did it shouldn't effect the underlying sheet.

(Just written this response without testing - but pretty sure it would work!)

Hi Shelly,

Debbie is correct, and the sorting in the report won't affect the sheet but beware that they still can use the sheet and mess it up again.

I had a MAJOR issue today with a new user going in and sorting a sheet. He had been given Editor privileges by somebody else. All other users are Viewer.

Anyway, there HAS to be a way to stop users from doing a sort. This messed up over 4,000 lines of formulas I had to go in and fix...TWICE. I fixed it once, then he went in and did it again.

I know about using a report, but I believe that only paid licensees can change data and sort criteria in a report, or is that not correct?

In any event, disabling a user's ability to sort MUST be possible, especially when the results can be catastrophic.

I was able to accomplish locking the sort for Editors by Locking the First Row. Test before you rely on it for your huge mission critical sheets but this worked for me!
