Automated Workflow - Invalid Date Error

I have set up an automated workflow to trigger when status changes to complete if date field is greater than 12/31/18. I am able to choose the date but it changes to "Invalid date" when i save the workflow. I thought maybe since the date field i was using is an automatic number field, it didn't recognize the field as a date but i've trying using a date-type field and get the same error.
