Completely agree this is a GAPING HOLE in the functionality!
It's appalling that Smartsheet doesn't provide the support to leverage cross-sheet linking capabilities to dynamically drive the contents of a drop-down (aka the equivalent of using a named-range in excel). The manual effort and amount of time that is wasted on drop-down value maintenance across a suite of sheets for a given project is a detriment to the efficient use smartsheet.
Both the contacts lists (which is it's own feature/object type) and user-defined columns that need their own user-defined list of valid values; they need to be able to be maintained from a central place within a Workspace or within a project folder.
As Michael indicated, the more you use Smartsheet the bigger this issue becomes. This is a gap that limits the effective growth and broad penetration of Smartsheet within an organization, because there is an exponential increase in sheet maintenance costs the more the product is used.
Do yourself and all of the worksheet owners a service and find a way of supporting automated maintenance of drop-down lists.
The geek in me can't resist providing a suggestion.
In the column properties dialog, add an input field that allows the user to link the drop down to
a) one or more contact groups (for a contact type column) OR
b) to a cell or a group of cells from another sheet (for a single or multi-select column type).
The linkages could be evaluated upon sheet opening or refresh to reduce the performance impact.

She has worked for the Mesa County Valley School District 51 for 35 years, and was promoted in 2021 to become the district's Curriculum Financial Analyst & Administrative Liaison. Additionally, she was part of the inaugural class of Smartsheet Overachievers in 2020 and is an active member in the Smartsheet Community.
"My advice to new Members is to really dig in and explore Recent Discussions," she says. "Folks in the Community have been a HUGE help when I have had questions, especially when it comes to complex formulas and being think partners on workarounds."

Re: FAQ: Where do I leave feedback for the Community and/or Product?
It would be amazing if the Product Enhancement Request form had a public tally. There have been things being requested on the community for years and years, and Smartsheet's never responded to anyone's Enhancement Request about. If it's not happening, just tell us it's not happening. A public roadmap would be amazing or even things being seriously considered.
I've seen hundreds of threads asking for better time management options. I've seen dozens of threads asking for dropdowns to allow you to select a sheet to generate the dropdowns (which exists now in DataMesh, but this should honestly be a core feature).
Adding Images in Form Body and Descriptions
Currently, I am using Google form to capture responses because of the easy creation logic using section builder and adding images to the questions.
It would be great if the smartsheet form had the same capability as google form with easy creation of logical questions by adding images with the questions.
Delete Rows using an Automation
Please create automation to delete Rows. Using the move rows automation, we are able to move records to an archive sheet. The problem then becomes we have to manually delete records from the archive sheet.
Workstation Picture!
Here's a quick picture of my "workstation" (for the scavenger hunt). I can't say it is always that clean though. I usually have at least 5 or 6 of the notebooks open and scattered across the desk. Hahaha
Archive Workspaces
Add feature to archive a workspace (without breaking any references within or outside the workspace) so that it is either moved under Archived folder or through appropriate implementation is hidden from other workspaces (but can be accessed if needed)
Introduction
Hello all!
I am terrible at talking about myself, but here goes anyway... I have been using Smartsheet for about 5ish years now. When I first started, I wasn't given a choice in the matter and fought it from the start. But then it started to grow on me.
I saw the many capabilities of it and how it could help in so many areas. Now I use it for quite a bit in my personal life including tracking water levels for kayaking trips, mileage and maintenance of my personal vehicle, quite a few things for my tree service, and a whole slew of other stuff.
I am also fortunate in that I get to pretty much live in Smartsheet for my job as well. Being an information management consultant and leveraging Smartsheet for solutions has given me the opportunity to pay my bills doing something that I enjoy! I definitely consider myself lucky there.
I definitely enjoy a good challenge. I am one of those crazy ones that has fun building out the crazy formulas and solutions, so feel free to reach out!
