Community Corner Newsletter [April 2025]

Employee

Hello Community fam,

How’s everyone doing? It’s always a good month when I get to take the reins of the Community Corner Newsletter and brag about all the cool things YOU have accomplished since the last issue. 👏🏻 Big thanks to @Isaac A.’s issue last month when he took us all (virtually) to his hometown of Sarchí in Costa Rica. Can’t wait to visit IRL someday!

Take some time to go through these updates and cheer your fellow members on. Once you make it to the bottom, I wanted to join everyone in answering the April Question of the Month and tell you about the most important item on my desk right now. See you there! ⬇️

More about Alison:

The most important item on my desk is this picture of me and my Nonny. “Nonna” is how you say “grandmother” in Italian, but my oldest cousin could only say “Nonny” when he was little, so that became her name forever after.

Nonny and I had an incredible bond. As the matriarch of our family, she was also a natural queen of community building.

  • When she was raising my mom and her four siblings, her house was where all the kids in the neighborhood would go after school, especially if their own home lives were turbulent. Her door was always open.
  • Also around that time, she would often organize “jam nights” where family members would bring their instruments of choice and play music, sometimes late into the night.
  • Holidays and Sunday dinners were no joke in my house when I was growing up. A never-ending parade of people would come by (cousins, significant others, neighbors, friends, etc.) and we’d enjoy raviolis, fish, antipasto, stuffed artichokes, and so much more together as we all caught up. Of course, Nonny was the main chef cooking up a storm!

She made all this look easy even though I know she put so much work into everything she did. I think it looked easy because she genuinely enjoyed creating a space where people could relax and be themselves - together.

I’m writing this the day after her birthday (March 27). She passed in 2018, but I feel her with me all the time. It’s not lost on me that she’s the blueprint when it comes to my love of community - and also music and eating lots of pasta with friends!

I want to know your answer to our Question of the Month! Tell us your story, get that badge, and stay awesome my friends.
